Dental sutures are medical devices that are used for the closure of wounds. Some of the wounds include wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, surgical extractions, bone grafts, alveoloplaty, and others. Dental suture is used to ligate the open blood vessels or neighboring tissues, and promote wound healing. Dental sutures help in securing the surgery flaps at the correct place and avoid incidences of exposed bone, flap skipping, pain, delayed wound healing, and necrosis. Rising research activities globally in the field of dentistry have led to the development of safe and effective dental sutures over a period of time. The primary objective of the dental suture is to position and secure surgical flaps to promote optimal healings provide support for tissue margins until they heal, without dead space, and reduce postoperative pain. The suture material is an artificial fiber used to wound together until they hold sufficiently well by themselves by natural fiber (collagen), which is synthesized and woven into a stronger scar.
The ideal properties for a dental suture involve high tensile strength, high sterility, pliability, non-carcinogenicity, biologically inactive, irritant-free, and others. A dental suture can be delivered to the point of injury or wound using a suture needle. An ideal suture needle must be sharp, sterile, corrosion-resistant, and capable of moving through the tissues with minimal trauma possible. Suturing instruments such as needle holders, scissors, tissue, and forceps are used to assist the procedure of dental suturing. Some of the most commonly used suturing techniques in dentistry include interrupted simple sutures, continuous simple sutures, mattress sutures, and crisscross sutures.
