Probiotics are live microorganisms that are intended to have health benefits when consumed or applied to the body. They can be found in yogurt and other fermented foods, dietary supplements, and beauty products. Although people often think of bacteria and other microorganisms as harmful “germs,” many are helpful. Some bacteria help digest food, destroy disease-causing cells, or produce vitamins. Many of the microorganisms in probiotic products are the same as or similar to microorganisms that naturally live in our bodies.
Probiotics may contain a variety of microorganisms. The most common are bacteria that belong to groups called Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Other bacteria may also be used as probiotics, and yeasts such as Saccharomyces boulardii. Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) is a type of probiotic ("good" bacteria) found in the human gut, mouth, and vagina, and also in certain foods. L. acidophilus is sometimes added to fermented foods such as yogurt and is also found in probiotic supplements.
Market Dynamics
The rise in the geriatric population and the inclination towards fortify food products with natural additives is driving market player to introduce new hybrid probiotics that have low side effects. Probiotics helps in quick digestion without aggravating the production of gastric acids and bile, thereby increasing digestive efficacy which may drive probiotics product demand. Moreover, key market players are focusing on development of new probiotic blends to enhance their market presence. For instance, in June 2017, Chr. Hansen Holding A/S, a bioscience company and a supplier of food cultures, probiotics, enzymes, and human milk oligosaccharides, announced the expansion of their human microbial strain library for manufacturing next-generation probiotics.
