Applications of Ethanol in the U.S.: Beyond Fuel and Energy

When we talk about U.S. ethanol, the first thing that comes to our mind is biofuel. That’s right. Majority of ethanol produced in the United States is utilized as a biofuel. It is blended with gasoline to create ethanol-gasoline mixtures like E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline) and E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline).

Ethanol as a renewable fuel is gaining wider popularity in the United States. This is mostly due to its ability to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. However, this is not the end of the list of ethanol’s applications.

Beyond fuel and energy, a significant percentage of ethanol is used in many non-fuel applications across the United States. It is utilized in industries like pharmaceuticals, food & beverages, personal care products, and industrial solvents.

What is Ethanol?

Ethanol, also referred to as ethyl alcohol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CH2OH. This volatile, colorless liquid is characterized by wine-like odor and pungent taste. In the United States, it is mostly produced through fermentation of feed corn.

The ethanol production process is gradually evolving in the United States amid growing food insecurity and land use concerns. As a result, the focus is shifting towards using cellulosic sources like agricultural residues and wood chips.

Industrial Applications of Ethanol

  • Ethanol as Solvent

Ethanol is widely used as an industrial solvent in the production of paints, coatings, varnishes, and adhesives. This is due to its tendency to dissolve a wide range of substances. It also serves as a key raw material for the synthesis of chemicals like acetic acid, ethyl acetate, and ethylene. Growing demand for these chemicals from plastics and synthetic fiber sectors is expected to boost U.S. ethanol industry growth in the coming years.

  • Ethanol in Pharmaceuticals

Ethanol is often used as a pharmaceutical solvent due to its ability to dissolve various insoluble medical compounds. It enhances the stability and absorption of drugs like pain relievers and cough syrups. It can also be used as a sedative and preservative in certain pharmaceutical products.

Ethanol is being increasingly as a disinfectant. It can kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses thanks to its antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Many sanitizers and disinfectants feature ethanol as an active ingredient. High usage of ethanol in medical applications will also benefit the United States ethanol industry.

  • Ethanol in Food and Beverage Industry

Ethanol plays a key role in beverage alcoholic beverage production and food preservation. It is the main ingredient in alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, and spirits. Ethanol causes intoxicating effects as well as enhances the flavor profile and preservation of alcoholic beverages.

The food industry uses ethanol as a solvent for flavorings and colorants. It is also used in extracting food flavorings. Apart from this, ethanol is also used as a food preservative to prevent microbial growth and extend shelf life of packaged food products.

  • Ethanol in Personal Care Products and Cosmetics

Ethyl alcohol is used as a solvent for producing various cosmetic, beauty, and personal care products. Ethanol in cosmetics acts as a preservative and a carrier for active ingredients in toners, lotions, and deodorants.

Ethanol can act as an astringent in aftershaves and facial toners. It has the potential to reduce skin oiliness and protect it from acne. Ethanol-based cosmetic and personal care products can kill microorganisms that cause acne and skin rashes. It is also utilized in hair care products like hairsprays and gels to help with quick drying and setting.

  • Ethanol in Cleaning Products

Ethanol is also used in various household applications, including cleaning and sanitizing products. It is a key component in household cleaners, air fresheners, hand sanitizers, and disinfectants.

The application area of ethanol is expanding rapidly across the United States. From being used as an industrial solvent for producing chemical intermediates to being used as a food preservative, ethanol’s versatility is driving its widespread adoption in non-fuel applications.

Further advancements in ethanol production technologies and growing emphasis on sustainability are expected to expand the application area for this alcohol. As a result, a robust growth is on the cards for the target industry.

According to Coherent Market Insights (CMI), the U.S. ethanol industry size is projected to reach US$ 60.66 billion in 2032. Overall ethanol demand in the nation will likely rise at 9.2% CAGR during the forecast period.
