Key Developments in the Building Information Modelling Industry

In July 2024, Esri and Autodesk further solidified their partnership to enable enhanced data interoperability between Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with ArcGIS Pro now directly reading BIM and CAD elements from Autodesk products. The innovation aims to integrate GIS and BIM workflows, which can potentially transform the handling of geospatial and design information by architects, engineers, and construction staff in the AEC sector.

In June 2024, Hexagon, a Swedish technology company, acquired Cordoba-based Voyansi that deals in the sale of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to expand its BIM offerings. The move not only deepens Hexagon's roots in the international BIM marketplace but also identifies the expertise in Argentina's technology industry, specifically in Córdoba, where Voyansi has spent the last 15 years creating design, architecture, and engineering services for international construction markets.

In May 2023, Autodesk, Inc. announced the initial capabilities of Autodesk Forma, an industry cloud that will integrate workflows for the teams designing, constructing, and maintaining the built environment. Forma's initial capabilities address the initial-stage planning and design phase using automation and AI-driven insights that ease the exploration of design ideas, free up repetitive work, and assist in assessing environmental aspects around a construction site, allowing architects to concentrate on designing creative solutions.

In April 2023, Autodesk, Inc. conducted a large-scale global survey of more than 2,500 business executives and professionals from Design and Make industries like architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO); product design and manufacturing (D&M); and media and entertainment (M&E).

Sustainability has brought enormous innovation to the BIM sector. What the practice of sustainability is being revolutionized by the adoption of BIM can be comprehended through perspectives of energy efficiency, environmental impact simulation, and optimization of resource usage. Companies can now design buildings that are not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly, which helps support global sustainability efforts.

The role of BIM is also on the rise in the asset management sector. Apart from construction, BIM is increasingly being used in facilities operation and maintenance. It provides facility managers precise digital representations allowing predictive maintenance, space management, and long-term asset tracking, which reduces operational costs and maximizes the performance of assets.

In the business world, business world BIM is growing because businesses want to maximize their return on investment in infrastructure. Businesses are applying BIM to simplify project workflows, enhance resource planning, and enable creativity in building design. Strategic application of BIM not only enhances productivity but also aids in corporate sustainability and regulatory compliance.

The building information modelling market is expected to achieve a 13.9% CAGR in the forecast period, according to Coherent Market Insights (CMI). This growth is due to the rising need for BIM solutions in different industries such as construction, real estate, infrastructure, and facility management. The overall industry value is expected to reach US$ 25.06 billion by 2032, fueled by technological advancement and increasing demand for smart, sustainable building practices.

In addition, the creation of sophisticated BIM software with the integration of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) is transforming the design and visualization process. Immersive technologies enable stakeholders to walk through projects prior to construction, improve understanding, minimize errors, and enhance stakeholder participation.
