An antiseptic is a chemical agent that stops the growth of microorganisms on external surfaces of the body, and helps to prevent infections. Antiseptics are also referred to as skin disinfectants. However, chemical agents can be used as an antiseptic and disinfectants depending on their concentration. For example, hydrogen peroxide 6% solution is used for cleansing wounds, while stronger solutions (>30%) are used in the industry as bleach and oxidizing agent. The high prevalence and incidence of hospital-acquired infections have increased the awareness on hygiene among healthcare professional, whereas rising concerns over the spread of infectious diseases in residential, commercial (or industrial), and healthcare units have led to increasing preference for private clinics and hospitals among the populace. These factors are expected to drive growth of the antiseptic market in the near future.
Market Dynamics
Increasing cases of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are also expected to drive growth of the antiseptic market over the forecast period. For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2017 report, each year, around 1 in 25 U.S. hospital patients are diagnosed with at least one infection related to hospital care. Many healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are caused by the antibiotic-resistant (AR) bacteria, which may lead to sepsis or death.
However, stringent regulations proposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for OTC antiseptic products are expected to hamper growth of the antiseptic market during the forecast period. For instance, in 2015, the U.S. FDA announced that Triclosan and other 23 active ingredients are not classified as 'Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE)' to be used in OTC health care antiseptic products.
