Next generation probiotics (NGP) or live biotherapeutics are organisms that have been designed to be used as living medicines to treat, cure or diagnose disease. They differ from traditional probiotics in that they are likely to be registered under a drug regulatory framework. At present, conventional probiotics are used as either functional foods or as supplements, whereas next generation probiotics are mainly used as therapeutics and hence are subject to the full range of registration processes and clinical trials.

The next generation probiotics market is expected to gain further traction, with evolving applications which signifies the new genera of probiotics. The well recognized applications of next generation probiotics are drug administration, vaccine delivery, immunomodulation (boosting the immune system), psychobiotics (for the treatment of mental disorders), cancer treatment and prevention, stress tolerance, production of antimicrobial compounds, to understand the pathogenesis of enteric infections.

Market Dynamics

Market players are focused on raising funds from investors for the development of next generation probiotics which is expected to drive market growth over the forecast period. For instance, in May 2019, Whole Biome (now Pendulum), a biotechnology company, announced that it had secured US$ 35 million in Series B financing, which was funded by investor Sequoia Capital, a venture capital company and others. The company had used the funds to advance the commercialization of its patented product, expand its discovery pipeline, and scale clinical trials for their novel microbiome interventions.
