Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) is a system used to suppress vibrations in various machineries such as ship structures, vibrations caused due to propellers, mounted machinery, etc. It is made of two sheets that are rigid, however, have poor damping properties. A damping material such as viscoelastic is placed between the two sheets. When the surface vibrates, it is trapped between the two sheets and degenerated in the constrained layer as sheer energy. Vibration damping materials are widely used in automotive applications to dampen the vibration and sounds of the engine, thus reducing road noise.

Global constrained layer damping market was valued at US$ 429.83 Mn in 2021 in terms of revenue, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.35 % during the forecast period (2022 to 2030).

Drivers

The automotive industry constantly aims at reducing vehicle weight while striving to improve the noise, vibration, and harshness performance. This increases the demand for improved vehicle acoustic performance with lightweight acoustic materials, treatments, and components. CLD comprises viscoelastic material layers with high stiffness, which help dissipate vibratory energy in the structure through sheer deformation of the viscoelastic layer. Thus CDC proves to be an efficient technique to subdue throbbing and sound in these structures, due to which the demand for CDC is in turn increasing. This is a major factor driving growth of the constrained layer damping market. Integration of lightweight acoustic materials allows for enhanced vehicle efficiency, especially in heavy vehicles such as pickup trucks and SUVs, while reducing the noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) impacts. Increasing demand for lightweight automotive materials to lower fuel consumption, in turn, is boosting demand for constrained layer damping.

The Covid-19 virus has caused widespread disease in countries around the world since the start of the epidemic in late fall 2019, leading to the declaration of a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.
