An electronic nose is a device used for sensing smell, odors, and fragrance of the surrounding. This device consists of electronic sensing, which is used for comparison, identification, quantification, and even data storage and recovery. Electronic noses comprises three primary elements: a delivery system, a discovery system, and a calculating system.  These electronic nose offers commercial advantages over the human equivalent. For example, for companies handling large-scale production activities, it is not logistically possible to track freshness, quality, and cleanliness of each product by means of human sensing. In these cases, e-nose helps to ascertain if the goods meet quality standards.

Recent Developments:

  1. In February 2022, SmartNanotubes Technologies, a German startup technology company developed the world’s first micro power multi-channel gas detector chip. It senses multiple gases and volatile organic compounds suitable for applications such as environmental, home, and security.
  2. In November 2020, scientists at NTU Singapore Nanyang Technological University invented an artificial olfactory system that imitates the mammalian nose to find the freshness of meat. 

Growing concern for health is one of the major driving factors for growth of the market. Thus, demand for e-nose is expected to increase for application in the food and beverages (F&B) industry, in order to improve the quality of the foods, which in turn helps in decreasing diseases caused by food contamination. For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year 48 million people get sick from food borne diseases in which 3,000 die every year. This electronic nose consist of sensors, which have ability to determine presence or absence of contaminants and related chemicals. Therefore, this electronic nose is used throughout food manufacturing process in order to maintain the quality of food. Hence, this factor helps in propelling growth of the market. Moreover, it is used by food inspectors, in order to identify freshness of the food products and it also helps in separating spoilt food from fresh food. Thus, this is expected to aid food and quality inspectors to provide certification to food manufacturers after checking the quality of food.

Restraint:

Major factor hampering growth of the market is the cost of electronic nose, which is very high. Owing to high prices of sensors incorporated in electronic nose, cost of the total product is high.
