Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) systems are FDA class II devices that consist of a vacuum pump, drainage tubing, and wound dressing set requiring electricity to maintain its use. NPWT is indicated for the application of suction (negative pressure) to promote wound healing and for the removal of fluids such as wound exudate, irrigation fluids, bodily fluids, or infectious materials. NPWT may be indicated for use on chronic, acute, traumatic, sub-acute, and dehisced wounds, diabetic ulcers, pressure injuries, skin flaps, and grafts.

Global negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) devices market is estimated to be valued at US$ 2,288.1 million in 2022 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period (2022-2030).

Global Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Devices Market- Drivers

Increasing prevalence of chronic wounds and ulcers among the global population is expected to drive the growth of the global negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) devices market during the forecast period.

For instance, according to an article published in the National Library of Medicine, on October 5, 2020, titled “The Incidence of Pressure Ulcers and its Associations in Different Wards of the Hospital: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” it is estimated that about 2.5 million hospitalizations annually in the U.S. are due to pressure ulcers. Moreover, in the U. S., about US$ 11 billion is spent annually by the healthcare system for the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers.

Increase in the prevalence of diabetes is expected to the drive the market growth over the forecast period.

For instance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of September 16, 2022, 422 million people globally have diabetes, and the prevalence has been rising more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries. In 2019, diabetes and kidney disease due to diabetes caused an estimated 2 million deaths, globally.

Global Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Devices Market– Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic

Since the COVID-19 virus outbreak in December 2019, the disease has spread to over 100 countries across the globe and the World Health Organization had declared it a public health emergency on January 30, 2020.

COVID-19 has affected the economy in three main ways: by directly affecting production and demand of drugs and vaccines, by creating disruptions in distribution channels, and through its financial impact on firms and financial markets. Due to nationwide lockdowns, several countries, such as China, India, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Egypt, and others, faced problems with regard to the transportation of drugs and vaccines from one place to another. Pre-pandemic wound care model typically required visits to an outpatient facility (e.g., wound care center), which in response to the pandemic were misclassified as nonessential or limited access. Thus, negatively impacting negative pressure wound therapy devices market.

Global Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Devices Market: Key Developments

On October 13, 2022, 3M Health Care Medical Solutions, a division of 3M, announced that its 3M V.A.C. Therapy negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) had surpassed a clinical evidence milestone of 2,000 published, peer-reviewed medical journal studies. V.A.C. Therapy is the first and only NPWT solution to garner this number of published studies about its therapy. It is backed by more clinical data than any other brand, accounting for more than 75% of published NPWT clinical evidence.

On August 24, 2021, Aatru Medical, LLC, a privately-held medical device company, announced that it had received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) Class II clearance for its NPSIMS Negative Pressure Surgical Incision Management System for the NPWT market.

Global Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Devices Market: Restraint

The major factors that hinder growth of the global negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) devices market include product recall and complications caused due to NPWT devices. For instance, on December 2, 2021, the government of Canada announced the recall of Avelle Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Pump manufactured by Convatec Inc., a medical products and technologies company, due to the manufacturing defects.
