Network slicing is a method of virtual networking architecture in the same family as network functions virtualization (NFV) and software defined networking (SDN) — two closely related network virtualization technologies that are moving modern networks to software-based automation. Network functions virtualization (NFV) and software defined networking (SDN) allow far better network flexibility through the partitioning of network architectures into virtual elements. Moreover, network slicing finds application in various industries such as healthcare, automotive, media & entertainment, government, and others.

Increasing number of mobile operators are leveraging edge and cloud computing to bring low-latency, high-speed, and secure connectivity to the network edge while improving operational efficiencies. For instance, in August 2021, U.S.-based electronics company Keysight Technologies joined Google Cloud Partner initiative to propel 5G services at network edge.
