For instance In April 27, 2021, Repsol, Enerkem, and Agbar built the first waste to chemicals plant on the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish multi-energy company Repsol will join the Ecoplanta project, together with the technology leader Montreal-based firm Enerkem and Agbar, a global expert in water and waste management, to build a waste to chemicals plant in Tarragona, Spain. The plant has a capacity to convert around 400,000 metric tons of non-recyclable municipal solid waste into an annual production of 220,000 metric tons of methanol for renewable plastics or advanced biofuels. Renewable Methanol Market: Market Segmentation

As per European Technology and Innovation Platform BioMCN in the Netherlands produces methanol from biomass by gasifying glycerine, a byproduct of biodiesel manufacturing. The fundamental difficulty is the economic feasibility of gasifying biomass at high pressures and conditioning raw synthesis gas. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) a Japanese transport company launched a dual-fuel vessel. "Cajun Sun" successfully completed the first-ever net-zero voyage fuelled by bio-methanol. The voyage is an example of how Methanex and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. are collaborating to demonstrate the viability of methanol as a marine fuel with a pathway to net-zero emissions.
- In October 2022, the world’s first commercial scale CO2-to-methanol plant started production in Anyang, Henan Province, China. The cutting-edge facility is the first of its kind in the world to produce methanol, a valuable fuel and chemical feedstock at this scale from captured waste carbon dioxide and hydrogen gases. The plant's production process is based on Emissions-to-Liquids (ETL) technology developed by Carbon Recycling International (CRI).
