Scientific studies have shown that advanced preservation technologies have the potential to extend the shelf life of seafood products by as much as 50 percent, thus reducing spoilage and waste in the supply chain. Flexible Pouches and Retort Packaging Transforming Convenience
One of the most notable innovations in the tuna industry has been the move towards flexible pouch packages. Retort pouch packages consist of multi-layer plastic and aluminum structures. These packages have the advantage of transferring heat more efficiently during the sterilization process. This results in 30-40 percent shorter retort times and energy savings during the manufacturing process.
Industry manufacturers have started using retort pouch packages to offer consumers more convenient and better-tasting products. Fresh tuna preservation is becoming dependent on sophisticated gas packaging techniques. Modified atmosphere packaging involves the use of gases other than oxygen, like nitrogen and carbon dioxide, which inhibit the growth of microbes.
