Recent Developments in the Agricultural Tractors Industry

The agricultural tractor industry was valued at US$ 83.56 Bn in 2024, expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.6% from 2024 to 2031. This growth is mainly attributed to the development of technologically advanced tractors.
For example, VST Tillers Tractors Ltd. launched two new tractors at the CII Agro Tech India 2022 exhibition. These tractors are included under 45 HP and 50 HP categories. They were developed as a collaboration between VST and ZETOR, both companies involved in the manufacturing of tractors and agricultural equipment.

Similarly, another global leader, AGCO Corporation, introduced the 700 Vario Series tractors in North America in 2024. These tractors come with an improved powertrain with FendtiD low engine speed, and offer increased hydraulic speed, VarioDrive transmission, and come in a bigger frame.

Growth Drivers

A major growth driver for the industry is government initiatives to increase food production. With growing population, there is an increased demand for food. To fulfill this demand, governments are supporting farmers for buying equipment that would make farming more optimized and hence, increase production.
Another positive factor is the increasing mechanization in the agricultural field. This is happening for several reasons:
• Decreased availability and increased cost of labor
• Rise of organic and sustainable farming, needing appropriate equipment
• Technological advancements in the farming equipment
• Increasing demand for food

Insights, By Type

Among tractor types, internal combustion engine (ICE) tractors are way more popular as compared to hybrid/electric tractors. There are a number of reasons for this:
• Farmers, especially in developing countries, are more familiar with these tractors. And since tractors are a big and long-term investment, most people prefer to go with the safe and proven option.
• The availability of maintenance services and repair parts for ICE tractors is far more widespread than for their electric counterpart.
• On-farm charging is a challenge, especially in areas with unreliable electric grids. As a comparison, refueling a diesel engine is far easier.

Insights, By Region

Being ahead in technological innovation, North America lead the industry with a 38.9% share in 2024. This is because the region is witnessing high mechanization in the farming industry. Also, the large land holdings in the region necessitate the user of equipment to carry out farming processes. Additionally, leading manufacturers have a strong presence in the region, which is benefitting the market as well.

Another significant market is the Asia Pacific region. While the rate of mechanization is currently lower then developed countries, there is a lot of scope for growth. Countries, such as India, China, and Japan, have large populations, which is leading to an increased demand for food. To increase production, governments are also supporting the farmers to purchase farming equipment like tractors. Taking advantage of this, local manufacturers are focusing on catering to this domestic demand by offering models as per the need of the farmers in the region. They are also working on strengthening their distribution channels and offering aftersales support.
