Automotive engine dynamometer is a mechanical system used to measure numerous automotive parameters, which include torque, force, rotational velocity, and energy. Vehicle producers, automobile checking out service vendors, and car elements suppliers considerably use dynamometers for the testing of cars. The maintenance of physical parameters is important to evaluate the performance of the automobiles and for restoration reason.

The European Union is focusing on introducing new regulations in several areas such as reduction of CO2  emissions from vehicles, developing CO2 standards for cars and vans and also CO2 labelling of cars. The government is also focused on cutting down greenhouse gases (GHG) intensity of vehicle fuel up to 10% by the year 2020.

European Clean Air Policy focuses on maintenance of air quality standards for reducing pollutant emissions. This has led to introduction of Real Driving Emission (RDE) approval test under the regulation EU 2017/1151. This regulation is for diesel engine calibration and NOX (Nitrogen Oxides) emission for gasoline emission vehicle.

In September 2017, European Union developed a new standard, Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) for determining the levels of pollutants and CO₂ emissions, fuel consumption from light-duty vehicles. Moreover, in May 2018, the European Council agreed to reform the type-approval and market surveillance system for motor vehicle in Europe, which modernized the current system and improved control on car emission replacing EU's legal framework set out in directive 2007/46/EC.
