Vascular imaging refers to different diagnostic imaging techniques that are used to visualize the interior surface of blood vessels and detect abnormalities. The main products utilized in vascular imaging include ultrasound, x-ray imaging, Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans.
Ultrasound utilizes high-frequency sound waves to generate images of blood vessel structures and blood flow. Due to the non-invasive nature, with no radiation exposure, it is widely used by providing real-time imaging. The main types are doppler ultrasound, which evaluates blood flow, and B-mode ultrasound, which images anatomical structure. However, ultrasound has limitations in imaging some vessels and is highly operator dependent.
X-ray imaging such as angiography involves injecting a radiopaque contrast material and imaging blood vessels with x-rays. It remains the gold standard for imaging arteries and veins due to its high spatial resolution. The most common types are digital subtraction angiography and CT angiography. However, x-rays use ionizing radiation which can potentially induce cancer risks. CT and MRI angiography utilize specialized scans that are combined with contrast agents to non-invasively image vessel lumens and walls in fine detail. CT provides very fast acquisition but involves radiation risks. MRI uses strong magnetic fields and no radiation but is more expensive and unable to image patients with certain implants.
Market Dynamics:
Global vascular imaging market is mainly driven by the increasing prevalence of diseases like varicose veins across the world, thus leading to increasing imaging to diagnose the disease. For instance, according to the data published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) on August 5, 2022, globally about 2%–73% of the population is affected by varicose veins while the prevalence rate in Pakistan is 16%–20%.
