In-mold label involves the use of labels during manufacturing of containers by processes such as extrusion blow molding, injection molding, and thermoforming. The label works as an integral part of the final product, which is later delivered as pre-decorated item. Combining the decoration process with the molding process not only cuts the total costs, but also increases the manufacturing time.
IML is most commonly used for consumer products that have a short life span, such as food containers, cosmetic and personal care containers and household product containers. The in-mold labels are employed in high speed, thin walled, multi-cavity injection mold machines. The labels are usually printed on polypropylene and are only a few tenths of a millimeter thick.
Market Dynamics
IML is gaining immense traction globally due to the increasing demand for efficient, innovative, and premium labels. This is attributed to the increasing consumer awareness about the trends related to packaged food and rising consumption of containers and bottled packaging. The growth of the IML market is due to its growing customer base and increasing demand for packaged and branded products especially among the emerging markets such as China and India. The advent of e-retail as well as the increasing cross-border trading have helped leading brand-owners to promote sales of their international brands in the fastest-growing economies of Asia Pacific.
Manufacturers that are engaged in offering in-mold labels are focusing on R&D activities, in order to increase their presence in the market. For instance, In April 2019, CCL Industries Inc., a leading global label leader, has acquired Hinsitsu Screen (Vietnam) Company Limited.
