Herbicides are essential pest control compounds for efficient growth of food crops and other plants. Farmers use herbicides in order to control weed growth in their farms whereas, herbicides are also used to prevent growth of weeds in home gardens, lawns and landscaping applications.
Soil active herbicides are herbicides which are applied over the surface of the soil uniformly. This can be done by either spraying method or broadcasting method. The soil active herbicide is incorporated inside the soil so as to prevent its volatilization as well as photo-decomposition. These herbicides are of two types, selective or non-selective. Selective herbicides are usually target specific i.e. they kill only some species of the plant without harming the other. Whereas, non-selective herbicides destroy all or majority of plants present on the treated soil surface.

Synthetic herbicides are manufactured with synthetic chemicals whereas, bio-herbicide are weed control agents derived from bio-based ingredients. Bio-herbicides are formulated with microorganisms such as plant extracts, bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and insects including parasitic wasps and painted lady butterfly which can target specific weeds and prevent their growth.
