  • In October 2021, Akzo Nobel, a U.K. multinational company that produces paints and performance coatings, obtained a patent for the technique of producing monochloroacetic acid. This invention relates to a reactive distillation method for producing monochloroacetic acid utilizing chlorine and acetic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst. The method, as well as the requisite reactive distillation apparatus, is less complicated than conventional reactors, and it produces a monochloroacetic acid product with a low proportion of over-chlorinated compounds.
