Citrus pectin is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in citrus fruits such as oranges, lime, and lemons among others. Citrus pectin can be used as a thickening agent when heated with sugar. These characteristics of citrus pectin are used for manufacturing jams and jellies among others. Although, it is a natural source of pectin, it can have side effects such as gas, bloating, and loose stools among others, as people allergic to citrus fruits cannot consume citrus pectin-based products.

Recent Developments

• In September 2019, Silvateam, a manufacturer of the food industry, oenology and beer, mainly pectin, tara gum, tannins entered a joint venture with JRS Group (a Germany-based manufacturer of organic fibers) to form JRS Silvateam Ingredients Srl. The new company will focus on production and marketing of pectin and texturizing systems. The joint venture will help Silvateam to expand its presence in the global pectin market.
• In October 2019, Herbstreith & Fox, a manufacturer of pectin entered into a partnership with Algaia S.A. (a France-based manufacturer of seaweed extracts). Both companies will work together to offer a combination of alginates and pectin for baking applications. The products will be marketed as single ingredients or as a blend. The partnership will allow Herbstreith & Fox to expand its product portfolio.
