Summary

Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) is an osteoconductive and osteoinductive commercial biomaterial. It is an approved medical device used in bone defects, it has a long track record of clinical use in diverse forms. Demineralized bone matrices are prepared by acid extraction of allograft bone, resulting in loss of most of the mineralized component but retention of collagen and non-collagenous proteins including growth factors. Demineralized bone matrix is used to extend and bolster the bone graft. This is due to the ability of growth factors to control the differentiation of progenitor cells, which are responsible for bone and cartilage formation.
