The identification of Galectin-3-binding protein (LGALS3BP), and its function as a binding protein to the spikes of the SARS-CoV-2, thereby causing inhibition to the viral protein action.

Presence of the unique spike protein in the coronavirus structure, made the virus, so much effective and deadly. This spike protein is responsible for the binding of the virus in to the host body, to start a series of anomalous reaction in the body. For the last one year this spike protein has been the centre of mass for many researchers, as all of them assumed that inhibition of the function of the spike protein will surely inhibit the infection rate.

A recent discovery published in Nature Communications, by a group of researchers of king’s College London, states about a unique bonding of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein along with galectin-3-binding protein (LGALS3BP). According to the researchers, this interaction can be useful as an anti-viral target, which can be used in the therapeutic control.

The study included analysis of the blood sample in most systematic manner. The researcher’s, divided the serum and plasma samples in three group: First group was about the Covid-19 patient admitted in ICU (Intensive Care Unit), another Covid-19 patients of non-ICU category, and the last being the other non-Covid-19 patients present in the ICU.

The report suggests the identification of Galectin-3-binding protein (LGALS3BP), and its function as a binding protein to the spikes of the SARS-CoV-2, thereby causing inhibition to the viral protein action. In this way this LGALS3BP, is offering protection to the cells of our lungs. The report, along with suggesting a potent targeted therapy, also tell us about the need of a paper diagnostic method, to analyse, that is present in the blood samples of respective Covid-19 patients.

It is understood by the fact that to stop this menace named as Covid-19, the people have to stop its progression in to the host body. As long as it is present in the nature, its mutation capability is reduced, henceforth production of new strains will be paused. A taskforce should be employed with efficient personnel, for implementation of these techniques, to make a world soon enough, free of this menace.
