April 19, 2025 – In the contemporary era, where cancer prevalence is at its peak, there has been an increasing interest in taking supplements for preventive care. One such supplement is the sunshine vitamin, or simply Vitamin D.
A new study published in the journal Nutrients revealed that Vitamin D can play a key role in preventing and treating colorectal cancer effectively. Researchers in Hungary conducted a meta-analysis of 50 previous studies and discovered a strong link between adequate Vitamin D levels and a significantly reduced risk of colorectal cancer.
The review highlighted Vitamin D’s anti-inflammatory and immune-regulating properties. Researchers concluded that these effects of Vitamin D help inhibit cancer cell growth, promote apoptosis, and reduce intestinal inflammation.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Janos Tamas Varga, PhD, associate professor at Semmelweis University in Budapest, said, “The most important finding is that vitamin D plays a crucial role in preventing and treating colorectal cancer.” He further added, “Our research clearly supports the strong correlation between Vitamin D (particularly its 25-hydroxyvitamin D form) levels and cancer outcomes.”
The research also found that, in addition to prevention, vitamin D supplementation can improve survival rates among patients with advanced-stage colorectal cancer. These claims are expected to drive demand for vitamin D supplements, creating lucrative growth avenues in the vitamin D ingredients industry.
According to Coherent Market Insights (CMI), the global vitamin D ingredients market is poised to exhibit a CAGR of 11.2% during the assessment period. Total vitamin D ingredient industry size will likely reach USD 8.41 billion by 2032.
“The latest research linking vitamin D to reduced risk and improved outcomes in colorectal cancers marks a significant turning point for the vitamin D ingredients market. It is expected to encourage people to opt for supplements like vitamin D for preventive healthcare purposes. Thus, we expect a sharp rise in high-quality vitamin D formulations,” says a senior analyst at CMI.”
The new research validates the therapeutic potential of vitamin D as well as positions its ingredients market for exponential growth, especially in functional food and pharmaceutical applications. Rising number of such research will directly impact sales of vitamin D ingredients in the coming years.
Vitamin D’s role in reducing cancer risk remains an ongoing focus of scientific research. However, avoiding low vitamin D levels is suggested by healthcare professionals. For instance, study author Dr. Monika Fekete concluded from the latest research that individuals at high risk of colorectal cancer should monitor their vitamin D levels and take daily vitamin D supplementation if necessary.
Leading players are expected to invest rigorously in R&D to develop high-quality vitamin D ingredients to meet end user demands. This will also help them to solidify their market positions during the projection period.
