Marubeni has signed an agreement with Hyosung Heavy Industries (South Korea) and Skeleton Technologies (Estonia), a company that develops energy storage solutions, to jointly create a new power grid stabilization system called “E-STATCOM.” This will be the first project of its kind in South Korea.
E-STATCOM combines Hyosung's power control technology with Skeleton's high-voltage energy storage system to stabilize the power grid. It operates by storing and quickly releasing energy to handle changes in power caused by renewable energy sources or fluctuating demands, like those from data centers. Marubeni will help by providing the energy storage units needed for development, with plans for commercialization by 2027.
As renewable energy use grows and data centers expand, especially with the rise of AI, power demand has become more unpredictable. This new system will help keep power steady, even during these fluctuations, supporting both the move toward cleaner energy and the growing need for strong power systems to support AI and digital technologies.
Since investing in Skeleton in 2021, Marubeni has worked as a major partner, helping to distribute products in Asia. For this new project, Marubeni will also assist with supply and sales, aiming to bring the product to South Korea and expand into other countries like the United States, where the need for stable power grids is growing due to rising demand from data centers.
