Skin diseases are conditions that affect skin. These diseases may cause rashes, inflammation, itchiness or other skin changes. Some skin conditions may be genetic, while lifestyle factors may cause others. Skin disease treatment may include medications, creams or ointments, or lifestyle changes. A dermatoscope is used in dermatoscopy, also known as dermoscopy or chemiluminescence microscopy, which is a non-invasive, in vivo technique for examining skin lesions. The dermatoscope has a magnifying lens and a light source for better viewing of subsurface skin features. Dermatoscopes come in a variety of forms, including digital and smartphone dermatoscopes, analogue and digital dermatoscopes, polarized and non-polarized dermatoscopes, and more. Analog dermoscopy is also known as epiluminescence microscopy (ELM). Images or videos are converted to digital formats using a digital epiluminescence dermatoscope.
