The global diesel exhaust fluid market is estimated to be valued at USD 39.98 Bn in 2024, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8% from 2024 to 2031. Diesel exhaust fluid, also known as aqueous urea solution or DEF, is a non-hazardous liquid which is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. When injected into hot exhaust gases, DEF decomposes to ammonia and breaks down nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen and water before exiting through the tailpipe. DEF helps modern diesel vehicles comply with stringent vehicle emission standards by reducing NOx emissions from their tailpipes. The growing demand for diesel commercial vehicles along with implementation of stricter emission norms globally is driving the need for DEF worldwide.

 Market Dynamics:

Diesel exhaust fluid market is primarily driven by the rising sales of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipped commercial vehicles across major markets. Implementation of stricter emission regulations such as Euro 6 and BS6 in Europe and Asia Pacific necessitates the use of urea-based SCR technology in diesel vehicles to control NOx emissions effectively. This is creating a consistent demand for diesel exhaust fluid from automotive OEMs. However, supply chain disruptions caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the production and availability of DEF temporarily. On the other hand, growing awareness about vehicular pollution and its health impacts is prompting regulatory bodies to impose even stricter emission norms. This is expected to accelerate the adoption of SCR systems and DEF in the years to come. Furthermore, favorable government incentives and subsidies to promote clean commercial transportation provides new opportunities for the market players in the industry. Maintaining consistent quality of DEF during transportation & storage remains a key challenge for the market.
