Stem cells are the body's raw materials—cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells called daughter cells. These daughter cells become either new stem cells or specialized cells (differentiation) with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells, or bone cells. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types.  Stem cells may one day be used to make cells and tissues for the therapy of many diseases. Examples include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord injury, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Stem cells are different from other cells in the body in three ways:

  • Stem cells can divide and renew itself over a long period of time
  • Stem cells are unspecialized, so it cannot do specific functions in the body
  • Stem cells have the potential to become specialized cells, such as muscle cells, blood cells, and brain cells

Market Dynamics

Increasing research and development activities conducted by researchers in science institutes are contributing to the growth of the global stem cells market. For instance, in August 2022, scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science, a public research university in Rehovot, Israel, successfully generated living, growing mouse embryos complete with organ progenitors from stem cells alone—and they did it entirely ex utero, keeping them alive for eight days with the aid of an artificial womb that previously maintained harvested embryos until they were 11 days old.
