Amcor Introduces Innovative 2oz Retort Bottle for Nutritional Shots

5 March 2025, Amcor has launched a groundbreaking 2oz retort bottle with proprietary StormPanel technology. The innovation is in collaboration with Insymmetry, responding to the growing need for robust, shelf-stable packaging solutions for low-acid drinks like coffee and dairy.

The new bottle is being marketed as a solution for producers looking for consistent packaging that will hold up to the rigours of high-pressure retort sterilisation. This process preserves product integrity and enables a shelf life of up to 12 months without refrigeration – an important consideration for brands looking to respond to changing consumer demands for convenience and quality.

With the introduction of the StormPanel bottle, Amcor hopes to answer directly the food and beverage market's increasing demand for packaging that adheres to strict safety and nutrition regulations, such as the Real California Milk seal. The design of the bottle, which is compact, not only appeals to consumers who are health-oriented but also to the busy life of today's market.

As per coherent market insights, the flexible packaging industry is expected to grow at 5.5% CAGR over the forecast period 2025-2032. It is expected to be valued at US$ 314.54 Bn in 2025 and will be valued at US$ 457.85 Bn by 2032. Expansion in the e-commerce sector and online shopping are expected to make the size of the industry larger over the forecast period.

The international flexible packaging industry is set to increase steadily during the next few years. Food and beverage is the leading end-use segment and demand from food makers will be responsible for propelling volumes says senior consultant Kalpesh Gharte of CMI.

"At Amcor, we are dedicated to driving innovation that meets the changing needs of the food and beverage industry," said Greg Rosati, VP of strategy and marketing of Amcor Rigid Packaging (ARP). "Our StormPanel™ innovative packaging enables beverage brands to raise shelf-stable, low-acid products in a convenient, ready-to-use bottle."

The retort process involved with the new bottle is a less expensive and more efficient option compared to conventional aseptic processing.

By minimizing equipment investment requirements on a large scale and rationalizing production schedules, manufacturers are able to preserve the quality of the product without reducing operational efficiency. This ability finds favor with small businesses seeking to optimize their own production processes.

Josh Cua, Insymmetry's chief innovations officer, commented on the cooperative process involved in creating this packaging solution. "Amcor's packaging innovation expertise allowed us to design a bottle that not only excels in the retort environment but also meets increasing consumer demand for preservative-free nutritional shots," he said.

The StormPanel technology is designed to resist the intense forces of retort sterilization, holding its shape and structure in place throughout. This design uses elements that maintain its curved shape while still being able to bend certain areas when subjected to pressure, all in the interest of ensuring uniform performance and dependability.

Mikey Tom, ARP business development manager, stressed the importance of the partnership: "This collaboration demonstrates Amcor's capability to bring together in-depth industry knowledge and cutting-edge engineering to solve difficult problems".

The creation of the retort polypropylene bottle was characterized by a close partnership between ARP and Insymmetry. Utilizing finite element analysis and virtual reality technology, the teams optimized the StormPanel design for the best performance under sterilization conditions.

The selection of co-polymer resin and a one-step molding system improved further efficiency and scalability to enable quick prototyping and commercialization.
