Vietnam Battles Escalating African Swine Fever Crisis

Vietnam is witnessing a rise in Afrixtcan swine fever outbreaks. State media on Tuesday revealed that the number of infected pigs has more than tripled in just two weeks.

The nation has detected 972 African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks so far this year, a sharp increase from 514 cases recorded in mid-July, according to Tien Phong newspaper. This sharp increase shows that the disease is spreading much more quickly.

Rising incidence of ASF outbreaks is also once again drawing attention to the swine fever vaccine market. It is prompting increased interest as well as investment in swine fever vaccines as both government agencies and private sector players seek effective solutions to contain the disease.

According to Vietnam’s agriculture ministry, the number of pigs infected has surged from 30,000 to over 100,000 during the same period. The affected pigs have either died or been culled.

Nguyen Xuan Duong, Chair of Vietnam's Animal Husbandry Association, said, “ASF has broken out on a large scale across Vietnam, severely impacting the livestock industry, especially pork supply”. He stressed that no province in the country is safe from the disease.

ASF has negatively impacted the global pork industry for years. For instance, about half of the domestic pig population died in China in the2018-2 019 outbreak. The losses were estimated at over $100 billion.

Last month's outbreaks in Vietnam led Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to issue an urgent directive to provinces as well as government agencies. The government warned that the disease posed a threat to food supply chains, prompting swift action to contain its spread.

Vietnam was the first nation to develop an African swine fever vaccine that has been in commercial use since 2023. However, vaccination rates in the nation remain low due to concerns over cost and effectiveness.

AVAC Vietnam JSC, the country’s main African swine fever vaccine manufacturer, announced in June that it had sold 3 million doses domestically. The company exported 600,000 doses to international markets like Indonesia and Philippines.

The escalating African swine fever (ASF) crisis in Vietnam is putting swine fever vaccine industry into the limelight. It is driving renewed urgency and demand for effective immunization solutions.

According to Coherent Market Insights (CMI), the global swine fever vaccine market is projected to record a CAGR of 6.1% between 2025 and 2032. Total market valuation will likely reach USD 3,032.4 Mn in 2025 USD 4,589.8 Mn by 2032.

Increasing prevalence of ASF outbreaks is prompting government agencies and private players to ramp up investments in vaccine production and deployment. This surge is mostly benefitting key industry players like AVAC Vietnam JSC.

The crisis also underscores the critical need for scalable and affordable vaccination programs to safeguard pork supply chains as well as stabilize the livestock industry. As a result, the future of swine fever vaccine industry looks promising.

Leading manufacturers will look to develop more vaccines with higher efficacy and fewer side effects. They are also expected to ramp up their production capacities. This will help them to meet growing demand from countries like Vietnam.
