Next generation probiotics (NGP) or live biotherapeutics are organisms that have been designed to be used as living medicines to treat, cure or diagnose disease. They differ from traditional probiotics in that they are likely to be registered under a drug regulatory framework. At present, conventional probiotics are used as either functional foods or as supplements, whereas next generation probiotics are mainly used as therapeutics and hence are subject to the full range of registration processes and clinical trials.

The next generation probiotics market is expected to gain further traction, with evolving applications which signifies the new genera of probiotics. The well recognized applications of next generation probiotics are drug administration, vaccine delivery, immunomodulation (boosting the immune system), psychobiotics (for the treatment of mental disorders), cancer treatment and prevention, stress tolerance, production of antimicrobial compounds, to understand the pathogenesis of enteric infections.
