Sports water bottles are manufactured, circulated in the market in various range of material type such as polymer based (PET) bottles, glass, aluminium, silicon, and stainless steel. The need for hydration anytime at any place is fulfilled by water bottles and hence they have become an essential common commodity as water supply is not always easily available.

The different end uses paved the way for bottles with various material types. The stainless steel and glass water bottles are comparatively costlier than PET ones, but are more sustainable, eco-friendly, and don’t contain any chemicals such as BPA. Glass requires regular cleanliness and maintenance. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is the most widely used component for manufacturing plastic bottles, the specialty of such bottles is they are made in such a way that they can be reused, unlike single use plastics, they are much cheaper among other product material types. Although, PET bottles are reusable they are completely eco-friendly and pose threat to some extent.

Plastic pollution is one of the major problem witnessed globally as it eventually contributes to environmental degradation and climate change. Governments across the world have started drafting directives for banning plastic use or at least limit its usage. For instance, according to National Geographic, globally, one million plastic bottles are sold every minute out of which 91% do not get recycled. This in turn causes toxic accumulation in the oceans, environmental pollution and consequently leads to climate change. This alarming situation forced to incorporate use of reusable plastic water bottles made from PET, and other non-plastic based water bottles. The reusable PET bottles help in sustaining environment to a considerable extent.

Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak use of safe drinking water became a major concern among citizens, to ensure spreading individuals preferred carrying water bottles at places. In the current post pandemic phase a spike in travelling, camping, trekking, and other outdoor activities was observed. The hike in such activities and events is expected to remain constant and will propel the growth of global sports water bottles market in the near future.
