Danone North America is entering the protein market with the release of Silk Protein, a new addition to its plant-based drink products. The company says this product fills a gap in the market, as consumers increasingly seek high-protein options. Silk Protein is promoted as having the highest protein content of any refrigerated, plant-based milk available in North America.
Each serving of Silk Protein contains 130 calories, 13 grams of plant-based protein, and all nine essential amino acids. It also includes 3 grams of fiber and has 50% less sugar than regular dairy milk. The drink is free from artificial sweeteners as well as provides a good source of calcium and vitamin D to support bone health. Silk Protein is available in two flavors: original and chocolate.
The timing of the launch is a major step, as research shows that online searches for high-protein foods have more than doubled in the past year. A survey by the International Food Information Council (IFIC) revealed that 71% of American consumers want to raise their protein intake. Despite this growing interest, plant-based protein still makes up only 33% of the total protein consumed in the U.S.
Silk Protein is initially being rolled out regionally, with plans for full nationwide distribution by early 2026, as Danone focuses to tap into the increasing consumer demand for plant-based, protein-rich beverages.
