Samsung SDI, a well-known South Korean electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing company, has teamed up with BMW Group and US-based Solid Power Inc. to manufacture all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). ASSBs offer improved safety as well as higher energy density in comparison with current lithium-ion batteries, helping EVs achieve longer driving ranges and reduced weight.
In this partnership, Samsung will supply ASSB cells using solid electrolytes developed by Solid Power, and simultaneously, BMW will handle the development of modules and packs for these cells. The three companies will assess the performance of the ASSB cells and integrate them into BMW's next-generation evaluation vehicles.
The deal also strengthens the long-standing partnership between Samsung SDI and BMW, which has existed since 2009, by expanding their collaboration into a new area.
Executive Statement
According to Stella Joo-Young Go, Executive Vice President of the ASSB Commercialization Team at Samsung SDI, technological competitiveness in batteries will ultimately lead to innovation in electric vehicles. Samsung SDI will work closely with great global partners like BMW and Solid Power to take the lead in commercializing ASSBs.
According to Martin Schuster, Vice President Battery Cell and Cell Module at the BMW Group, with Samsung SDI joining our partnership with Solid Power, they gain significant momentum on their path toward advancing the development of new battery cell technologies. This global collaboration is another proof point of their overarching goal: to always be in a position to offer their customers state-of-the-art battery technology.
