Teledermatology is one of the most common applications of telemedicine, wherein telecommunication is used to exchange medical information regarding skin conditions such as skin tumor without any physical contact between the patient and the dermatologist. Teledermatology can be performed using two approaches: store and forward (SAF) and real time/live interactive teledermatology. Store and forward approach involves forwarding digital images concerned with medical information to the data storage unit of the dermatologist. It is as simple as sending a digital image of the skin condition over an email to seek consultation from the dermatologist. Store and forward approach does not require expensive equipment and does not demand presence of both the receiver and sender at the same time. In real time/live interactive teledermatology, the patient and the dermatologist interact via live videoconferencing. It may also involve use of telerobotic microscopes and remote surgery. Real time/live interactive teledermatology involves highly sophisticated and costly equipment. Moreover, it requires the presence of both the receiver and sender at the same time. Teledermatology uses non-invasive technologies for imaging such as medical photography, dermoscopy, confocal microscopy, ultrasound, and others.
Market Dynamics
The increasing incidence of skin conditions, rising investments by various government in telemedicine, and increasing adoption of inorganic growth strategies such as acquisitions and collaborations by key players operating in the market, are the major factors that are expected to drive growth of the global teledermatology market over the forecast period.
For instance, according to a review article published by Acta Dermato-Venereologica, a scientific journal in the field of dermatology and venereology in May 2020, on the basis of epidemiological data collected from year 1958-2018 it is estimated that every year around 17.1% of adults and 22.6% of children were diagnosed with atopic dermatitis globally. Atopic dermatitis, a form of eczema, is an inflammatory skin condition which affects both children and adults. The same source states that around 9.6% new cases of atopic dermatitis were diagnosed in children around the world.
