Cathodic Electrodeposition Coating Market – Insights

Cathodic electrodeposition coating have many environmental benefits that makes it an environment friendly solution for metal finishers. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) content in cathodic electrodeposition coating ranges from 0.1 pounds per gallon to 3.0 pounds per gallon, with most of the products containing below 1.0 pounds per gallon. Moreover, most of the cathodic electrodeposition coating products are water-based and are have low VOC. The epoxy and acrylic grades of cathodic electrodeposition coating are formulated to be hazardous air pollutants (HAPS) free. The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD/COD) levels in cathodic electrodeposition coating is low and the products have the capability to be run without any waste water to drain via closed loop rinsing.

A properly maintained cathodic electrodeposition coating system generates a minimal amount of solid waste. Moreover, these systems are clean systems and do not require disposable suits, respirators, and other protective gears for protection of workers from airborne hazards that are a daily concern for spray painters. Moreover, it reduces fire hazards as, most of the cathodic electrodeposition products are not considered ‘Red Label’ (substance is considered as flammable), as they are formulated from water-based materials. This simplifies shipping and storage of these products.

However, one of the drawbacks using cathodic electrodeposition coating include non-uniform coating i.e. part of the substrate, which is in proximity to the metal source displays higher thickness compared to the part, which is away from the source. However, this limitation can be reduced by using baths, where metal ions are in complex form.

The cathodic electrodeposition coats exhibits high level of protection against corrosion due to presence of aromatic polyurethane and urea type cross-linkers. However, coatings containing aromatic polyurethane cross linkers do not perform well in ultraviolet (UV) lights. Aromatic polyurethanes can cause yellowing of the coating itself as well as yellowing in subsequent layers. Moreover, during the baking process, a significant undesired side reaction produces aromatic polyamines. These undesired aromatic polyamines can inhibit curing of subsequent acid catalyzed topcoat layers and thus, can cause delamination of subsequent top layers after exposure to sunlight.
