Global Ceramic Membrane Market – Insights
Ceramic membranes are a type of artificial membranes made from inorganic materials (such as alumina, silicon carbide or some glassy materials). They are used in membrane operations for liquid filtration. On the basis of material type, the ceramic membrane can be segmented into alumina, titania, zirconium oxides, and others. Major applications of ceramic membrane include, water and wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, chemical processing, biotechnology, and others. Ceramic membrane finds application in technologies such as ultrafiltration, microfiltration, nano-filtration, and others. Increasing demand for ceramic membranes for various applications such as increasing demand of water and wastewater treatment projects is expected to propel growth of the global ceramic membrane market.
Among technologies, the ultrafiltration segment accounted for the largest market share in 2018, in terms of revenue. Ultrafiltration technology is suitable for pressure related operations, and to separate molecules present in water. They are nearly free of solids and effectively remove bacteria, parasites, and viruses. The ceramic membranes with ultrafiltration (with pore size around 10 nm) can be used to purify crude soybean oil from unwanted components such as free fatty acids, phospholipids, pigments, carbohydrates, sterols, proteins and their degradation products. Ultrafiltration has a varied range of applications including sterilization, water treatment, dairy processing, petroleum refining, and other applications.
According to the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI), the project of developing ceramic casing filters for pre-treatment of sea water was intended to evaluate its suitability for removing arsenic and iron from seawater using ceramic membrane.
The scarcity of water is a key concern in some regions as a result of water pollution and rising population. The rising demand for water treatment is the main driver for the global ceramic membrane industry. Rampant increase in emerging activities in the water & wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage & biotechnology sectors has fueled the ceramic membrane market in the Asia Pacific region.
The advantages associated with ceramic membrane are high flux, durability, chemical resistance and long life span which increases its use in several end-use industries. In environmental applications, the use of ceramic membranes has been very limited due to cost considerations even though they offer various unique benefits in the area, such as rugged structural stability, chemical and thermal stability.

North America is expected to witness the fastest growth in the global ceramic membrane market over the forecast period. Increasing demand for pure and high quality water, in addition to increasing use of advanced ceramic membranes in separation processes, is expected to fuel growth of ceramic membrane market in the near future in North America. According to American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), in 2018, 240 million Americans i.e. 76% of the population relied on the 14,748 treatment plants for wastewater sanitation. By 2032, it is expected that 56 million more people will connect to centralized treatment plants, rather than private septic systems, which is a 23% increase in demand.
