PeopleForBikes, the trade group for the U.S. bicycle industry, is creating a new premium data platform to provide faster, clearer market information. This will help bike retailers, brands, and suppliers make better business decisions. The platform was approved by the PeopleForBikes Board of Directors in 2024 after more than a year of planning.
The platform is powered by a new system called the Bicycle Industry Data Exchange (BIDE), which combines data from across the bike industry. It will give insights into things like retail sales, supplier sales, used bike sales, and direct-to-consumer performance. All data is anonymized and grouped to protect privacy while providing a clearer picture of the bike market.
BIDE: The Data Behind the Insights
BIDE is the secure system that supports the platform. It collects as well as organizes data from sales, orders, commerce, etc., giving high-quality insights without revealing any private business data.
Retailers as well as brands have been able to preview the data along with provide feedback during development to make sure the platform meets real-world business needs.
With BIDE, brands and retailers can track performance, compare with industry peers, as well as access tools like dashboards and reports to make better forecasts and plans.
Mission-Focused, Not Vendor-Owned
Unlike commercial data providers, this platform is owned and run by the bike industry itself. The money raised goes back into improving the program and supporting PeopleForBikes' mission. Retailers who contribute data can use the platform for free, with no membership required.
Executive Statement
According to Erik Saltvold, owner and founder of Erik's Bike Shop, this new data product is critical to the success of their industry. When they all have access to uniform data, they can drive stronger results with better decision-making. Making the biggest impact with this product is only possible through true partnership among all stakeholders. Without collaboration, the data will not deliver its full potential.
