The Volvo VNR was first revealed in March 2025, with orders opening six months later. Now, the first units have been made.
The Volvo VNR is built on a completely new platform, 90% different from the previous model. It is designed specifically for driving in crowded city streets, distribution centers, and urban areas, where good visibility, precision, and agility are very important.
The new VNR is assembled at Volvo Trucks' New River Valley Plant in Virginia, which is the company's largest manufacturing site in the world. The plant plays a key role in Volvo’s U.S. operations. Volvo has recently invested USD 400 million to upgrade the plant, including a new 350,000-square-foot area for welding cabs and improved paint and material systems.
The new VNR is up to 7.5% more fuel-efficient than the previous model, thanks to better aerodynamics, advanced powertrain features, and idle-shutdown systems.
The truck also has a strong safety package, with advanced technology designed for use in busy city traffic and areas with lots of pedestrians. It has improved forward visibility with a sloped hood and larger windshield, plus new safety features like side curtain airbags, making it the safest regional commercial vehicle Volvo Trucks North America has ever made.
Executive Statement
According to Peter Voorhoeve, president, Volvo Trucks North America, driving a truck in a busy city environment can be really challenging. The new VNR is engineered to address real-world operating challenges and improve safety both for the truck driver and other road users. They are excited to begin production and get these trucks into the hands of their customers.
