Edible Packaging Market By Material Type (Proteins, Lipids, Polysaccharides, Others),and End Users (Food and Beverages, Pharmaceuticals, Others) - Global Industry Insights, Trends, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2017-25

  • Report code : CMI17819 |
  • Industry : Packaging |

Edible packaging materials are made from proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids which are transformed into thin films. The film is converted into bags and pouches which are then used for wrapping food. They are commonly termed as food wrapped in food. Food packaged in edible packaging material is safe for human consumption. The main purpose of edible packaging is to create a strong barrier between the food and the environment which increases shelf life and quality of food and also reduce waste generation. A large amount of food packaging material is found in landfills. Usage of edible packaging would reduce the waste generated by food packaging industry. For instance, products such as, yogurt are double packaged where each serving is packaged in container and many such containers are packed in a large container. If each serving is packaged in edible packages than only larger package would be required.

Edible packaging provides advantages such as improvement in mechanical properties such as migration and permeation, minimization of respiration in vegetables and fruits, limitation in movement of moisture and other gases, enhancement of sensory properties such as sheen, extension of shelf life and provide antioxidant or antimicrobial properties. They also provide health benefits by incorporation of minerals, vitamins, and bioflavonoids. The aforementioned advantages of edible packaging and reduction of packaging wastage are the major growth drivers for edible packaging market. Furthermore, the increase in demand for processed food and technology advancements are fueling the market growth. The challenges for edible packaging industry are high cost of materials as compared to synthetic packaging and regulatory requirements.

Edible Packaging -Market Taxonomy

On the basis of material type, the global edible packaging market is segmented into

  • Proteins
  • Gelatin
  • Corn Zein
  • Wheat gluten
  • Soy proteins
  • Others
  • Lipids
  • Waxes and Paraffin
  • Shellac Resins
  • Acetoglyceride
  • Others

On the basis of end user, the global edible packaging market is segmented into

  • Food and Beverages
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Others

Lipid based edible packaging formed the largest segment in 2016 as they provide protection from moisture and provide sheen which enhances aesthetics of the product. Protein based material is the fastest growing  segment due the health benefits of proteins such as improvement in immunity and energy levels and maintains proper functioning of the body. Composite films are made by combination of materials to make a structurally strong and resistant packaging material. Moreover, proteins provides desirable mechanical and optical properties which helps them to prevent contamination by foreign substances. The demand for edible packaging is high in food and beverages industry.

Edible Packaging -Market Outlook

  • North America has highest producers and consumers of edible packaging. Thus, it has the highest demand for edible packaging. US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that 30.2% of household waste is from food packaging. Edible packaging is an excellent solution to reduce this waste. However, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should accept edible packaging material in the category of generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
  • In Europe, European Union ensures that the packaging material does not harm the food products or affect the taste, composition or odor of the food and also makes sure that the regulations are considered by the edible packaging industry. The importance of reducing waste and prolonging shelf life are driving the market of edible packaging in Europe.
  • Asia Pacific is a lucrative market for edible packaging owing to increasing awareness about its benefits. The increasing disposable income of the consumers which influences the standard of living is growing the edible packaging market in this region.
  • The edible packaging market is projected to grow in Latin America and Middle East owing to increase in urbanization, improvement in standard of living, and adoption of processed and packaged food. Furthermore, launch of various innovative products has augmented the growth. For instance, Bob’s which is a fast food chain in Brazil serves burgers in edible papers since December 2012.
  • Although there is low market penetration in Africa, innovations, creativity and sustainability awareness are increasing which in turn positively affects the edible packaging market.
