Google Maps is a Google-developed location tracking service that provides satellite imagery, street maps, aerial photography, street view, and route planning for tourists travelling by foot, car, and bicycle.

Google Maps provides processed traffic data that is instantly available and get updated each second. Google maps was offering traffic information as a color pattern on top of roadways in 2007 to represent the speed of vehicles on specific roads or streets. Crowdsourcing is used to collect real-time traffic information from a large sample of cell devices. Crowdsourcing is the process of gathering work information, or opinions from a large number of people who upload their data on a regular basis via social networking sites, the internet, and mobile applications. Google collects a variety of data and information when a person utilizes its services. This data is classified into two different types. The first is the information that the user tends to create to provide Google, and the second is the information that Google gathers while utilizing their services. Google gathers and saves data and information provided by the user, such as the user's name, when opening an account, posting images to Google, or sending texts using Google apps.  Furthermore, this contains data about the location of the user. Similarly, Google Maps, with the help of Google services, assists people in finding and exploring new routes.

Radar Technology and Sensors: Google Maps monitors traffic by monitoring the movement of Android devices on roadways. The Android smartphone transmits anonymous data to Google, notifying it of the speed of moving devices on the streets. Previously, Google Maps relied on traffic cameras embedded by government and the private sector. The google maps identified traffic situations on the road by using radar systems and detectors. This information is usually updated based on anonymous traced user data, satellite information, and traffic sensors to ensure that the map depicts the best possible traffic conditions. According to Google, the speed and location data it collects to calculate traffic patterns is anonymous. Although, users can choose not to share their location with Google Maps via their account settings. Google stated, ‘Once users deactivate the my Location, Maps will no longer send radio information back to Web server to verify your handset's exact coordinates.'  To identify regular traffic patterns, Google Maps utilizes machine learning (ML) in combination with a variety of data sources such as combined location data, real-time user feedback, historical traffic patterns, and local government data.

Using machine learning, Google Maps divides the traffic as green, yellow, or red, indicating heavily congested, clear, or slow-moving traffic. Green roads represent normal or moving traffic, whereas yellow and red roads show congested traffic jams and slow down, respectively. Previously, Google Maps used historical information to track traffic data gathered from traffic sensors by computing the average time it took for the tourist to travel from a specific source, a specific section of road at specific times on specific days. All of these were components of private and public transport networks that focused and installed devices to capture traffic information. Sensors identified the size and speed of passing cars using radar systems, and the data was wirelessly transmitted to the database. Sensor-provided information from these databases was used to provide real-time traffic reports. However, as the devices were only installed on high-traffic roads, the information collected by detectors was restricted to primary roads and highways.

Crowdsourcing: To address these difficulties, Google chose crowdsourcing for improvement of its traffic forecasts. Google now analyses moving traffic by using location data from moving mobile phones (android devices or phones with the Google Maps API installed) that report continuous vehicle movement. As per the report of Google, Google Maps, constantly refreshes tracked user data, traffics sensors, and satellite data to ensure that the application displays the most accurate traffic updates possible. Google Maps continuously combines data from all vehicles on the road and sends it back to customers, which is marked by various colored lines. While more tourists use this location-enabled GPS, traffic forecasts become much more accurate. As Google Maps regulates the average distance travelled by cars, bikes, buses, and pedestrians along the same route, the Maps are updated each second, notifying customers of traffic jams. If Google Maps is unable to predict or generate traffic flow information about a particular part of road, that part appears grey on the traffic layer. Google Maps notifies traffic updates, based on customer input, to help maintain map routes up to date. The incident will be noted to Google Maps and added to the map. As users continue to update or report on the alerts, maps will return quick results, potentially slowing down tourists and aiding in the discovery of ideal roads in emergency cases.

General Transit Feed Specification: Google Maps route planner helps users to search directions while biking, driving, or walking. Google has collaborated with over 800 public transportation suppliers worldwide to adopt the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), making the information reachable to third party companies. The GTFS data format is now used by thousands of public transportation providers. The GTFS is an information specification that enables transportation organisations to upload transportation data in such a way that can be consumed by a wide range of software apps. Google Street View, which provides 360-degree panoramic street-level viewpoints locations, was released in May 2007. Google has officially started mapping colleges, and their surrounding areas as part of upcoming updates. Google released Google Underwater Street in 2014, which included 2,300 kms of the Australian Great Barrier Reef in 3D. Street View navigation of the International Space Station interior spaces became available in both Google Maps and Google Earth in 2017.

In December 2009, Google introduced a new website comprising of the birds-eye-view feature and the 45-degree angle aerial imagery that was available exclusively only to programmers via the Google Maps in San Diego and San Jose cities. 45 degrees became available on Google Maps around the globe in July 2010. With the development of technology, Google Maps now provides drivers with a real-time view of busy highways in addition to directions. Along the way, Google Maps has introduced many great features like availability of current and future traffic, a search engine, adding stops between source and destination, a search engine, arrival and departure of bus and train timings, navigation among buildings, adding their contributions and favourite places, navigation through voice hearing, creating and saving offline maps, measuring the distance between points, and location sharing. Furthermore, Google Maps offers a commute that verifies departures, disruptions, real-time traffic, and travel times delays, as well as route comparison. Given the privacy concerns, telecom providers understood the importance of Global Positioning System (GPS) in mobile phones, and as a result, Google Maps discovered that the more cell phones people used, the more precise real-time traffic information can be collected.
