The increasing number of infections leading to various health hazards will contribute to rising number of Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) tests, which in turn will drive the global ESR tubes market growth. According to the World Health Organization, in 2018, healthcare associated infection was around 10% and surgical site infection was 50% globally. ESR is one of the basic hematological tests, which is performed to identify various disease conditions. Technological advancements leading to development of automated ESR analyzers is expected to drive the global ESR tubes market growth.
Moreover, adoption of advanced ESR tubes in the healthcare industry is a major factor driving the global ESR tubes market growth. Increasing usage of ESR tubes and ESR analyzers in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and academic institutions drives growth of the global ESR tubes market.
Global ESR Tubes Market - Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic
The spread of the novel coronavirus has hampered growth of the healthcare industry. In December 2019, in China’s Wuhan City, a cluster of pneumonia cases were reported by Chinese health authorities. The pneumonia causative agent was identified as a novel coronavirus named COVID-19. This virus spread rapidly across the globe, thus causing a concerning number of fatalities. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 as a global pandemic and suggested implementation of strict measures to minimize the spread of this disease. The pandemic has slowed down growth of the healthcare sector and has led to a disturbance in the supply chain.
Moreover, governments across various countries have implemented nationwide lockdowns to curb the spread of COVID-19. Similarly, in various countries across the world, healthcare companies are facing problems of continuing its supply chain operations. The slowdown of the healthcare companies’ supply chain has also impacted growth of the global ESR tubes market.
The global ESR tubes market is estimated to be valued at US$ 105.1 million in 2020 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 5.3% during the forecast period (2020-2027).

Global ESR Tubes Market – Regional Analysis
On the basis of region, the global ESR tubes market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa.
North America is expected to witness significant growth in the global ESR tubes market, as manufacturers are developing advanced systems such as automated ESR analyzers to provide instant detection rate. The launch of such advanced analyzer devices is expected to drive growth of the ESR tubes market in this region. For instance, in September 2019, the U.S-based Alcor Scientific launched miniiSED, a single position fully automated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) analyzer.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness highest growth rate during the forecast period, owing to increasing number blood borne infections and inadequate sanitation conditions in the region, which leads to increase infections among population. Moreover, governments are focusing on improving healthcare infrastructure and providing better healthcare facilities to the population, which is expected to propel growth of the global ESR tubes market in Asia Pacific.

ESR tubes are used to conduct erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) blood test, which helps to measure how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube that contains a blood sample. The ESR tubes are made up of plastic and glass materials with anticoagulant additives such as sodium citrate. In normal blood sample, erythrocytes settle slowly at the bottom of a test tube. The faster rate of erythrocyte sedimentation indicates inflammation in the body. The inflammation in the body may cause as immune response to infection or injury. The ESR test is used to determine symptoms of an inflammatory disorder such as weight loss, fever, anemia, and headache. The ESR tubes are used with ESR analyzers, for clinical and diagnostic purposes.
Market Dynamics
The increasing demand for erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), as biomarker used as a general condition indicator is expected to drive growth of the global ESR tubes market. ESR measurement is useful in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, temporal arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, multiple myeloma, and several autoimmune diseases. Clinical studies have also suggested possible relevance of ESR levels in different other conditions. In the 1920’s, Swedish practitioners, Robert Farhaus and Alf Westergren, developed a systematic method for ESR measurement. The Westergren ESR test method is described as gold standard and was adopted as a reference method for ESR measurement by the International Council for Standardization in Hematology and Clinical and Lab Standards Institute (CLSI) in the U.S.
