Chicory is a summer active woody plant that has a numerous medical properties. Chicory is a well-known substitute of coffee with no caffeine content. Chicory is a native plant of Europe but is now increasing found in parts of Africa.   • In 2015, Nestle announced the agreement with South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Eastern Cape Government to revive the South Africa’s Chicory Industry. The agreement was aimed to increase the local sourcing of the plant for use in its Nescafe Ricoffy chicory which is Nestle’s coffee brand.
  • In 2017, SLN coffee Pvt. Ltd launched Levista Instant Coffee in Chennai, India. The Levista coffee is available in 3 distinct blends including classic, premium and strong. Classic blend is 100% pure coffee, premium includes 80% of coffee and 20% chicory and strong coffee blend includes 60% coffee and 40% chicory.
  • In February, 2018, Keygene announced the launch CHIC Project. The project is funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020 research & innovation program and Keygene is one of the 17 members of the consortium. The research will be focused on the chicory as a multipurpose crop for dietary fibre and medicinal terpenes.
