The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) has launched a digital tool to improve identity checks in the shipping and logistics industries. Called Identity Exchange, the system is designed to simplify the often-repeated "know your customer" (KYC) checks that businesses do when forming new partnerships in global trade.
DCSA says these current processes can be slow, inconsistent, and expensive, and they could also create risks in the supply chain.
Identity Exchange is a platform that provides verified company information, helping organizations get accurate and up-to-date details for checking new partners.
DCSA mentioned that the system had a 95% success rate in delivering verified company data during its first use. This shows that the tool can improve compliance and speed up the process of bringing new partners on board.
The development of Identity Exchange involved working together with DCSA's founding member carriers and other industry partners. DCSA believes this teamwork is important to make sure the system meets the needs of the container trade industry.
The product is now available through a website and can also be connected via an API. Companies that want to try out Identity Exchange can access it during a limited trial period. The ongoing revenue from this service helps DCSA continue developing open standards and solutions for the container shipping industry.
According to Coherent Market Insights, the Shipping Containers Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2025 to 2032. Currently, the market is at USD 11.87 Bn in 2025 and is expected to be around USD 17.28 Bn by 2032. The demand for shipping containers is driven by the growth in global trade. Emerging economies in Asia Pacific and Latin America are expected to fuel the demand as their manufacturing and exports continue to increase over the next decade. Adoption of technology and automation solutions for container handling is also expected to drive efficiencies and reduce costs.
DCSA chief product officer Niels Nuyens said: “Identity Exchange reflects DCSA’s broader role in driving the industry’s digital transformation. Standards remain fundamental to this mission, but achieving true digitalisation demands stronger digital infrastructure.
“We are proud to deliver DCSA’s first product, one that enhances daily operations and builds on the foundation the industry needs to digitalise effectively at scale.”
Commenting on the product, DCSA member ZIM Global Customer Service Directorate traffic manager Yossi Bar, and business and documentation supervisor Missy Barron said: “The Identity Exchange Platform supports our strategy to continue and provide excellent service to our customers while ensuring our compliance with international regulations and sanctions.”
