Leonardo.Ai has revealed a new brand and launched its Creative Engine API. This is the first big update since joining Canva.
With this move, Leonardo is expanding beyond a tool for creators, becoming a platform for developers and businesses to build AI-powered creative workflows.
Cameron Adams, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Canva, called the launch a "huge milestone" for the team.
The new Creative Engine API lets developers and companies add Leonardo’s AI tools and models to their own products and platforms.
According to Leonardo, the API turns its internal creative tools into something that can be programmed, helping more businesses use it, especially those working on AI-driven creative products at a larger scale.
This update changes Leonardo from a tool for creators to a platform for businesses in design, media, gaming, and marketing.
Leonardo says this change reflects its role within Canva, with the motto “Yours to Create” continuing Canva’s mission to help people design. Since Canva acquired Leonardo, it has worked as a separate AI platform while also contributing to Canva’s growing AI features.
The launch of a public API shows that Leonardo is aiming to be a core system for third-party developers, not just a tool for users.
For those in EdTech and creative tech, this move shows a bigger trend: AI creative platforms are now focusing more on working with businesses and developers, not just individual creators.
As per Coherent Market Insights, the Creative Software Market will grow at an 5.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2025 to 2032, from USD 10.02 Bn in 2025 to around USD 14.48 Bn by 2032. The market is seeing a shift towards cloud-based creative software platforms, making possible real-time collaboration and improved accessibility for remote teams. Also, the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities is helping users with automated design suggestions and improved workflow efficiencies.
JJ Fiasson, Co-Founder and CEO, says: “Too often, the AI conversation is focused on what the technology can do. We’re looking at the potential of human creativity and designing tools to unlock what’s possible for millions of creators every day.”
Leonardo describes its platform as a “creator-first generative AI platform,” supporting users from early concept development to asset production at scale.
Dwayne Koh, Head of Creative, says: “So much of creating with AI is experimentation. The best breakthroughs often come from playing around with a new tool until you see something unexpected. That’s why we designed our visual language to be malleable. It’s our way of reflecting the flexible and iterative way we create today.”
