The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is working more closely with MITRE Corp., a nonprofit organization, to make sure the U.S. stays a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) technology. NIST is investing USD 20 million to create two centers that will help develop and use AI-based tools.
The two new centers are:
- AI Economic Security Center for U.S. Smart Manufacturing – Focused on improving U.S. manufacturing using AI.
- AI Economic Security Center to Secure U.S. Critical Infrastructure from Cyberthreats – Focused on protecting important U.S. systems from AI-driven cyberattacks.
These centers will work on evaluating and advancing AI technology to keep the U.S. at the forefront of AI innovation, defend against threats from other countries' AI use, and reduce the risks of using insecure AI.
According to NIST, this is a key part of the plan to strengthen America's leadership in technology by speeding up the development and adoption of critical new technologies, in partnership with U.S. businesses.
