Ultra Violet (UV) adhesives are adhesives which cure (i.e. toughen or harden by crosslinking) on exposure to UV light. It is a photochemical reaction that eliminates the need for heat or solvents for curing. This method offers various advantages over conventional curing methods such as rapid cure speed and easy application. Enhanced physical properties such as high bond strength, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance offer better product performance than alternatives. In addition, reduction in cure-in labor and waste further decreases costs.

The major drivers for UV curing are the demand for cost effective, adaptable and easy application of adhesives. Moreover, the absence of solvent in curing will eliminate any VOC related concerns. The challenges are technical, with oxygen inhibition causing incomplete curing of the adhesive resulting in the formation of a sticky layer on top of the surface.

Acrylic UV adhesives have improved mechanical properties such as impact resistance, surface insensitivity and protection from moisture. They hold the largest market share in the UV Adhesive market. Epoxy UV adhesives can be customized according to product needs. On mixing with carbon, silver and gold in varied amounts, they exhibit various properties such as increased or decreased thermal and electrical insulation, chemical resistance and moisture resistance.

  • Various companies are focused on developing new products in order to maintain their foothold in the global market. For instance, in November 2019, a business line of Arkema – Sartomer, had launched a new liquid resin for UV-curable 3D Printing named N3xtDimension. This new resin exhibit various characteristics such as high flexibility, high-resolution prototyping and castability, impact resistance, etc. They find applications in various end-use industries such as automotive, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, among others.
  • Moreover, in October 2019, Herma, a German manufacturer of self-adhesive materials, had launched a new innovative luminophore UV curable adhesive. This adhesive was developed to allow monitoring of transparent labels with enhanced safety features. Various advantages offered by this new adhesive such as high transparency, whitening resistance, UV stability, resistance against heat, light, and water, etc. makes them a suitable choice for pharmaceutical applications.
  • Furthermore, in October 2019, Eurobond Adhesives, a British company, had launched their new Vitralit UC1535 adhesive. It is transparent adhesive, specially designed for electronics application. Vitralit is an epoxy based UV Curing adhesive which hardens quickly and is easy to dispense with non-shear thinning.
  • Also, in October 2019, a German manufacturer – Panacol, had launched a new orange fluorescent UV adhesive for bonding plastics. The new adhesive is USP Class VI standard certified which makes it an ideal solution for bonding medical devices.
  • In August 2019, Meridian Adhesives Group, a leading manufacturer of adhesives and sealants technologies had acquired Epoxies, Etc. Epoxies, Etc. is a leader in manufacturing and formulating UV Curable systems, specialty epoxies, silicones, urethanes, including adhesives, coatings, and potting compounds.
