High pressure processing (HPP) technology is widely used in the food industry for the sterilization process. HPP is also referred to as pascalization, equivalent to pasteurization of milk. HPP equipment operates on high isostatic pressures (around 250 - 600 Mpa) in order to inactivate the microorganisms and denature various enzymes without affecting the chemical composition, and taste of the food products. Such HPP systems are also referred to as high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) systems or ultra-high pressure (UHP) systems.

Market Statistics:

The global high pressure processing equipment market is expected to surpass US$ 477.4 Mn in terms of value by the end of 2028.

Market Driver

Increased production of ready-to-cook meat is expected to support the global high pressure processing equipment market during the forecast period. Ready-to-cook meat has witnessed significant demand in the recent past. This is due to rising urbanization, changing lifestyles, and increasing disposable income. As a result of this, the production for ready-to-eat cook meat has increased in developed as well as emerging economies. Thus, these factors are expected to propel the global high pressure processing equipment market during the forecast period. Access to several distant markets for perishable products such as fruits and vegetables has been rendered possible primarily due to high pressure processing. Moreover, HPP helps retain natural composition, freshness and at the same time helps in the sterilization of fruits and vegetables.

Market Opportunity

According to Coherent Market Insights’ analysis, in 2005, the total number of HPP systems installed across the globe was around 70. However, the installed base has since, grown significantly with over 14% CAGR to around 324 machines by the end of 2015. Major food & beverage companies have channelized efforts towards the adoption of the HPP technique for processing their offerings. For instance, Starbucks acquired the juice chain ‘Evolution Fresh’ (high pressure processed juices company), investing around US$ 30 million in 2011.

Global High Pressure Processing Equipment Market: Recent Developments

In September 2021, Hiperbaric introduces Bulk High Pressure Processing Technology. A new concept that allows to process beverages before bottling with the same benefits of traditional HPP equipment.

In February 2020, Portuguese juice maker Sofresco formed a partnership with Universal Pure, largest provider of high-pressure processing in The U.S. for co-location of space.

In January 2020, NuTy became India’s first company to use non-thermal HPP technology in food

Market Restraint

High energy consumption in HPP equipment is expected to hinder the global high pressure processing equipment market growth over the forecast period. Even though high pressure processing equipment is highly effective in terms of applications, it consumes a significant amount of energy. This remains a major challenge for manufacturers. Furthermore, high energy consumption results in increased operational cost, frequent maintenance, and reduced efficiency.

Global High Pressure Processing Equipment Market - Impact of Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic

The global high pressure processing equipment market has witnessed a sharp decline in growth due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Following the outbreak in December 2019, many countries chose to adopt nationwide lockdown policies, in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus. With temporary shutdown of manufacturing factories, the global high pressure processing equipment market experienced significant slowdown in growth. Furthermore, temporary suspension in global trade and stringent regulations on physical distancing has negatively impacted the market growth. However, the marketers are optimistic as countries continue to uplift different bans and regulations and open the economy for free trade. Besides, rollout of vaccines and declining cases of COVID-19, the global high pressure processing equipment market is expected to regain its lost traction.
