High pressure processing is a non-thermal processing technique wherein food products and beverages are subject to relatively high isostatic pressure in order to extend the shelf life. The HPP equipment operates on high isostatic pressures (around 250 - 600 Mpa) in order to inactivate the microorganisms and denature various enzymes without affecting the chemical composition, and taste of the food products. Such HPP systems are also referred to as high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) systems or ultra-high pressure (UHP) systems.
The global high pressure processing equipment market is estimated to be valued at US$ 217.2 million in 2021 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 12.5% over the forecast period (2021-2028).
In September 2021, Quintus Technologies launched new high pressure processing systems
In August 2021, JBT-Avure launched a revolutionary new bulk high-pressure pasteurization technology: the flexibulk.
In November 2020, Hiperbaric launched high pressure technology for the automotive and aeronautics industries, expanding its product line beyond food.
North America region held dominant position in the global high pressure processing equipment market in 2020, accounting for 58.5%% share in terms of volume, followed by Europe and APAC, respectively.

Global High Pressure Processing Equipment Market- Drivers
Increasing demand for processed food and advantages associated with the use of HPP are expected to drive growth of the global high pressure processing equipment market during the forecast period. Changing lifestyle and eating habits has led to significant increase in demand for processed, ready-to-eat, and packed good products. According to Coherent Market Insights’ analysis, consumption of processed food across the globe is expected to witness robust growth, registering a CAGR of around 6% - 8% during the forecast period. High pressure processing of food includes the use of hydrostatic pressure against that of heat or chemicals. Furthermore, it enhances the shelf life of products without affecting the chemical composition of products. As a result of this, the natural composition of the product is preserved for longer duration. Moreover, HPP is relatively less time consuming process as compared to other conventional processes.
Increasing demand for processed juices is expected to propel the global high pressure processing equipment market growth over the forecast period. The demand for processed juices has increased significantly in the recent past. There has been a strong increase in demand for natural, minimally processed, clean-label juices and super-premium juices across the globe. This, in turn, is expected to accelerate growth of the HPP technique worldwide. Several of juice producing companies are investing in HPP systems in order to tackle the challenges regarding preserving the natural flavor & composition, food safety, and shelf life extension. For instance, in 2010, around 20 brands of HPP-based juice were sold in the global market, this has increased to over 100 HPP fruit juice brands by 2015. Furthermore, companies are providing state-of-the-art technology for food processing and packaging services.
Governments of many countries are promoting the use of HPP systems. This is done to develop advanced food technologies. As a result of this, proactive initiatives are taken to expand the use of HPP systems. Key companies in the market can capitalize on these opportunities by providing novel solutions and gain a competitive edge in the market.
Growing health concerns among consumers has led to a massive rise in demand for organic food and clean label food products. Awareness regarding health benefits of consumption of clean label products has boosted the demand for the same. On the contrary, introduction of new products, in order to cater the consumer demand, has gained significant traction in the market.

|Restraints & Challenges:||
In the recent past, the HPP system manufacturers have increased the product variants in terms of their capacity either by increasing vessel size or by increasing the number of intensifiers. HPP system manufacturers are channelizing efforts towards addressing the aforementioned issue and are focusing on the development of novel automation solutions. Certain HPP systems involve loading and unloading by means of robotic arms.
Over the recent past, number of tolling service providers for food processing has witnessed significant growth. Several foods and beverage manufacturers are focused on tolling service providers for high pressure processing activity, owing to relatively higher capital investment associated with HPP systems. Such a strategy ensures access to HPP machines without the need to directly investing capital in purchasing the system and thus helping in availing of effective cost-benefits.

Key Takeaways of the Graph:
Global High Pressure Processing Equipment Market- Restraints
High equipment cost is expected to restrain growth of the global high pressure processing equipment market during the forecast period. Although there are numerous advantages of HPP equipment, adoption of high pressure processing at a large-scale is challenging. This is due to high cost associated with HPP systems. HPP system is a complex system comprising several components such as pressure vessels, pressure actuators, motor, and safety valves, among others. In order to sustain this immense pressure, the pressure vessels are generally designed under a specified code of ‘ASME boiler & pressure vessel code, section VIII, Div 3 rules’ and ‘European equipment directives 97/23/EC’.
Existing stringent food regulatory norms are expected to hinder the global high pressure processing equipment market. Stringent food regulatory norms are major factors hindering its adoption. HPP system manufacturers are required to comply with these norms, which can result in rigorous R&D activities. Moreover, these norms change according to regions.
