ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) bags such as anti-static bags, metallized bags, and conductive bags are used for storing electronic component, which are prone to damaged caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD). It is made from plastics such as Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene. The bags have three distinctive colors: silvery for metallized film and pink or black for polyethylene. ESD bags are used to prevent electrostatic damage of electronic items during transportation. Electrostatic discharge  is the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact, an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown.

Global ESD bags market was valued at US$ 384.8 Million in 2021 in terms of revenue, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.9% during the forecast period (2022 to 2030).

Moreover, according to Consumer Technology Association (CTA) 2018, unit volume shipping of smartphones in the U.S. is expected to increase by 2% and reach US$ 189 million by the end of the year 2018, while revenue is expected to increase by 3% to reach US$ 62.9 billion in 2018 in the U.S.

Growing environmental concerns regarding plastic pollution is a major factor of hindering growth of the global ESD bags market. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), around 400 million tons of plastic was produced in 2021 globally and according to the United States Environmental protection Agency report in 2018, plastics generation was 35.7 million tons in the U.S.in the year 2017, which was 12.2 percent of municipal solid waste generation.

Market Trends

ESD bags are used for the transport of electronics to prevent the electronic static discharge which is a key trend in the market. Static-Shielding bags simulate a Faraday cage effect for the electronics inside them, completely protecting them from a direct electrostatic discharge and building up static electricity. Static-Shielding bags are used for sensitive electronics that could be damaged by an electrostatic discharge. This is the key trend in the ESD bag market.

Among product type, anti-static bag segment held a significant market share 47.76% in the global ESD bags market in 2021, owing to increasing demand for its applications in electronics industry. Major application of anti-static bag is packaging of electronic products. Computer components and items of a similar nature can be easily damaged by static discharge. Anti-static bags are used to maintain a static-free environment for electronic products.

• In January 2021, EcoCortec announced its world-first biodegradable, compostable, and static-dissipative film and bags. EcoCortec is a bioplastic and anticorrosion packaging films and bags manufacturer in Croatia. The Eco-Corr Film ESD product launched by the company provides an eco-friendly packaging solution. The product has various industrial uses such as static sensitive electronics, packaging, telecommunications, and electric cars.
• In November 2020, Cortec Corporation which is a chemical company providing corrosion protection solutions launched EcoSonic VpCI-125 HP anti-static bags and film which contain corrosion inhibiting materials suitable for protecting multi-metal items such as electronics. The film and bags replace conventional rust preventatives such as oils and desiccants. The EcoSonic VpCI-125 HP has longer shelf life and contains permanent anti-static properties as long as the films or bags are in use, independent of the presence of humidity.
• In March 2019, a S.-based custom-engineered materials manufacturer, Transcendia acquired Purestat Engineered Technologies, an integrated manufacturer of electrostatic dissipative (ESD) active packaging solutions. This acquisition widens Transcendia’s product portfolio to include multi-layer barrier bags, films and laminates to serve high-value market applications in electronics, energy, aerospace, medical and food.
