ASML, a semiconductor equipment maker from the Netherlands, has finished building a new plant in South Korea. This facility will serve as a hub for collaboration between ASML and Korean chipmakers, according to the industry ministry.
ASML has completed a 16,000-square-meter facility, the "New Campus," in Hwaseong, South Korea, about 50 km south of Seoul. This campus will be a major manufacturing hub in Asia and support Korea's semiconductor supply chain.
ASML plans to expand collaboration with major Korean chipmakers like Samsung and SK hynix. The plant will also include a repair center for advanced equipment like EUV and DUV lithography systems and a training center for technology transfer. ASML is the global leader in EUV lithography systems, which are critical for making small circuit patterns on silicon wafers.
This new facility will play a major role in strengthening South Korea’s presence as a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing. By broadening local repair along with its training capabilities, ASML focuses on ensuring faster maintenance as well as more efficient technology transfers, benefiting not only local chipmakers but also the broader semiconductor ecosystem.
Executive Statement
According to Kang Gam-chan, deputy minister for trade and investment at the ministry, the advancement of Korea's semiconductor industry depends on close cooperation with municipal and central governments and international partners. This completion ceremony is a great example of such collaboration and he hopes to see even stronger technological cooperation and investment between Korea and the Netherlands in the semiconductor field going forward.
