Cloudflare and Coinbase have teamed up to launch the x402 Foundation, with the goal of making online payments simpler as well as more integrated with the modern web.
The x402 protocol revives the HTTP “402 Payment Required” status code, turning it into a way for websites, APIs, and even AI agents to request and process payments directly over the Internet.
Developers will be able to embed payment instructions into web responses, letting clients fulfill payments automatically and get access to paid services or resources.
This initiative aims to break down barriers posed by traditional payment systems, like geographic restrictions, currency conversions, and manual billing, by introducing a neutral, open standard for “internet-native money.”
In the future, this could allow AI agents or autonomous systems to purchase computing power, data, or APIs in real time without human intervention. The x402 Foundation will oversee its development, governance, and ecosystem support so that the protocol can gain broad adoption.
A key strength of the x402 system is its deferred payment scheme, which lets clients commit to make payments later rather than settling instantly. This flexibility supports use cases such as web crawling or data collection, where many micro‑transactions accumulate over time.
By decoupling the cryptographic payment handshake from immediate settlement, x402 opens the door for licensing models, batch charging, or subscription‑style agreements on top of pay‑per‑use. This approach promises to make x402 practical not only for ultra‑fast microtransactions but also for broader business models.
